Big Bass Fishin: a fishing sim that earned my commute

I did not expect to enjoy Big Bass Fishin as much as I did. On paper it's a simple loop — cast, wait, reel, repeat — and I assumed it would wear thin within a day. Instead it became my go-to game for the fifteen-minute train ride, and a couple of times I missed my stop.

The heart of it is the tension meter during a catch. You're constantly deciding whether to reel or hold, and bigger fish demand real patience. Yank too eagerly and the line goes slack with a little disappointing plop. Once I stopped rushing, my catch rate climbed and the whole thing clicked.

There's a steady sense of progress too. New lakes open up, you unlock rods and lures with different strengths, and each spot has its own rhythm of what bites and when. I got attached to one shady corner of the second lake where the big ones seemed to hang out.

If you're after a heavy strategy fix, this isn't it. But as a wind-down game it's excellent. My one tip: don't grind for the flashiest gear early. A basic setup you understand beats a fancy one you don't.
